On learning some skills in Motivational Interviewing

Our professional practice module provides the opportunity to develop practical skills in therapeutic intervention. Here’s what one student said about the learning session on motivational interviewing:

Enjoyable – and applicable

This was the most enjoyable session I have experienced so far. Motivational interviewing has adjusted my thoughts on person-centred therapy; I prefer it to solution-focused therapy because MI doesn’t appear to move too fast towards the solution aspect. I feel I can now see where and how this fits into health psychology. When I was thinking about the people I know and their health behaviours I can see how MI would benefit them. I feel I would be suited to the training of MI. I am active listener and am empathetic towards people, these are skills I have developed volunteering. I like the format and philosophy of MI.
